The process of recovering former communal and organizational property in the British zone of Germany by the Jewish Trust Corporation for Germany is very nearly finished, Sir Henry d’Avigdor Goldsmid, chairman of the corporation, reported to a meeting of the corporation today.
Work of recovering property has progressed to such an extent that the corporation was able to close two regional offices in Hamburg and Hanover, the report stated, and to achieve a considerable reduction in its administrative apparatus.
Among the tasks still outstanding, according to Sir Henry’s report, is a global settlement of many thousands of claims against the former Reich resulting from confiscatory measures of the Nazis. It is expected that such a settlement will be reached with the Federal authorities soon. The attitude of the German authorities continues to be “correct,” the report said, and the authorities at Bonn had been understanding and helpful.
The Jewish Trust Corporation has received support and encouragement in the past from the British Government, particularly the Foreign Office, the report said. The corporation then recorded a statement expressing its “deep gratitude” to the British Government for all its assistance.
