German refugees in South Africa, including men who in the past served with the German and Austrian armies, “are freely offering their services to the authorities,” the Information Ministry announced today. A large registration is expected throughout the Dominion, the communique said.
The War Office has received an offer by a group of Jewish refugees from central Europe to organize and equip an anti-aircraft unit. The offer was transmitted in behalf of the refugees by Col. Josiah Wedgwood, Labor M.P.
More than 1,000,000 Britons of all races and creeds contributed a total of £ 522,651 to the Lord Baldwin Fund for Refugees, it was announced today by the former Prime Minister in a report on the eight-month campaign which was brought to a close on July 31. Lord Baldwin expressed the hope that the public’s interest in the fate of the refugees “will not cease with the closing of the fund.”
