Rep. Henry Hyde (R-Ill.), chairman of the U.S. House International Relations Committee, announced his retirement. Hyde, 81, was known to be friendly to Israel, particularly focusing on religious freedom for Christians in Israel. Hyde said Monday that he will not run for re-election in 2006.
