The Bal Harbour residential section, a swank development in Greater Miami, was revealed today to have severe restrictive covenants barring Jewish purchasers. The covenants are embodied in warranty deeds issued for property in the area. One clause in the deeds spells out the duration of the covenants and another binds the buyer or seller to maintain the restrictions.
One of the clauses provides that no land in the area “shall be sold, conveyed or leased to anyone not a member of the Caucasian race, nor to anyone having more than one-fourth Hebrew… blood, nor to any concern or corporation in which any member or stockholder has more than one-fourth Hebrew…blood or is not of the Caucasian race…”
Two other clauses of the warranty deed link Jews with Syrians, who also are excluded from the exclusive residential area. The duration is indicated in a clause which provides that the restrictions “shall be and remain in full force for 25 years from the first day of January A. D. 1947 at which time that shall automatically be extended for successive periods of ten years each” unless a majority of the Bal Harb our residents at that time vote to change them.
