Sir Samuel Joseph, retiring Lord Mayor of London has been elevated to the peerage by the King, it was announced today. Sir Samuel was made a Baron.

Commenting on Sir Samuel’s tenure of office, the Times stated that he met the special wartime situations with “resourcefulness resulting from his long experience in humanitarian activities.” Sir Samuel was the first Jew to become Lord Mayor since about 1900.
