Speaking in behalf of the people of Rome, Vice-Mayor lay addressed today’s session of a three-day conference of representatives of displaced Jews in Italy. He assured the gathering that there are no traces of Nazi anti-Jewish theories among the inhabitants of this capital.
The 150 delegates, representing about 15,000 displaced Jews from UNRRA camps all over Italy, also heard greetings from Chief Rabbi Prato; Antonio Sorieri, chief of the UNRRA section for displaced persons; Allen Brook, representative of the Joint Distribution Committee; Umberto Nahon, representative of the Jewish Agency; Rafaelo Cantoni, representative of the World Jewish Congress and others.
The conference was arranged by the Central Committee of Jewish Refugees in Italy whose main function has been to represent the displaced Jews before civil and military authorities and relief organizations. Jacob Garfunkel, president of the committee, addressing the conference, protested against Bevin’s statement on Palestine and emphasized that the majority of the displaced Jews in Italy are determined to go to Palestine.
