Rome’s chief rabbi met Thursday with the pope in a private audience at the Vatican. Wishing Rabbi Riccardo Di Segni “shalom,” Pope John Paul II said he wanted to underscore the Catholic Church’s “vivid desire to deepen the bonds of friendship and reciprocal collaboration” with the Jewish community.
