Political refugee aid moved forward on two fronts in Washington today. The President’s Advisory Committee on Political Refugees held its first meeting in the State Department Building and made a preliminary survey to aid refugees.
The principal discussion was on settlement of refugees in different parts of the world, within the framework of existing legislation, in countries which have accepted the invitation to participate. The committee elected James G. McDonald, chairman, and Dr. Samuel McCrea Cavert, secretary. Present were Mr. McDonald, Dr. Stephen S. Wise, Hamilton Fish Armstrong, Paul Baerwald, Joseph P. Chamberlain, Basil Harris, Louis Kennedy and James M. Speers.
At the same time, the State Department announced appointment of Robert Pell, Divisional Assistant in the State Department, and George Brandt, foreign service office, as assistants to Myron Taylor on the International Refugee committee. Pell was elected because of his particular experience in international conferences, Brandt because of immigration experience.
