Adjusting their program to “consider health and defense problems brought about by the spread of war to the shores of the Mediterranean, 1,000 delegates of Hadassah open their 20th annual convention at the Hotel Gibson Wednesday night with a survey of war conditions and forces which have brought about the “downfall of European Jewry.”
President Roosevelt, in a message to be read at the opening session, counselled Hadassah to “rise in the spirit of true charity, true philanthropy and true Americanism to relieve human suffering through hospitalization, preventive medicine and other methods of modern public health work,” which he characterized as an “unlimited” opportunity.
He voiced “best wishes that your deliberations may be fruitful of wise counsels and constructive action in alleviating suffering and promoting happiness among all whom you serve.”
