Gen Antonescu, premier of Nazi-dominated Rumania, admitted in his Easter message to the nation that anti-Jewish legislation “has temporarily disturbed the economic balance of the country.” He added, however, that Rumania’s national interests require the elimination of Jews from their economic position and the “Rumanization” of all major Jewish enterprises.
The premier did not present details as to the extent to which Rumania’s economic life has been affected by the anti-Jewish economic regulations. He also did not elaborate as to why he considers the negative results which “Rumanization” of Jewish property has produced to be temporary. His message was broadcast over the Bucharest radio.
A statement declaring that the Rumanian government has decided to transform the country into a “National Totalitarian State” was also broadcast over the Bucharest radio. The statement was credited to Michael Antonescu, the premier’s nephew.
