First aid is being rushed to the 5,000 Jewish men, women and children who remained roofless as a result of a fire which swept the Jewish quarter of Kutais, Georgia. The damages were estimated to amount to 7,000,000 roubles.
The Council of Peoples’ Commissars of Georgia allocated 10,000 roubles and despatched ten wagons of bread to aid the victims. The Soviet of Tiflis despatched seven wagons of food and 20,000 roubles. Soup kitchens were opened in the Kutais Jewish quarter by the Red Cross. Many groups of workingmen throughout Georgia decided to give one day’s pay for relief. The fire affected only the Jewish population.
