A cornerstone was laid here this week-end for the Albert Einstein Jewish Hospital, an institution which the Jewish community of Sao Paulo, Brazil’s second city, will present to the municipality. It is planned that the hospital will accept patients regardless of religion or other status.
The initiative for building the hospital was taken by a group of 120 young Jewish doctors in this city. Their fund-raising efforts were supported by the contribution of a site from the estate of the late Hessel Klabin, Brazil’s best known Jewish philanthropist.
The hospital will have facilities for 250 patients, plus equipment, space and staff for the training of doctors and nurses. Total cost of the establishment is estimated at more than $10,000,000, one-quarter of which was pledged within two weeks after the campaign opened.
