Schacht Quits Economics Post, Stays As Reichsbank Head; Hitler Agrees

THE RESIGNATION OF DR. HJALMAR SCHACHT, GERMAN ECONOMICS MINISTER, WAS ACCEPTED TODAY BY REICHSFUEHRER ADOLF HITLER, THE ASSOCIATED PRESS REPORTED FROM BERLIN.

DR. SCHACHT SAID, ACCORDING TO THE A.P.: “MY RESIGNATION TOOK EFFECT YESTERDAY. I SHALL REMAIN AS PRESIDENT OF THE REICHSBANK FOR THE TIME BEING.”

THE REICHSBANK, REICHS CHANCELLORY, PROPAGANDA MINISTRY AND THE PRUSSIAN STATE MINISTRY ALL PROFESSED TO HAVE NO KNOWLEDGE OF ACCEPTANCE OF THE RESIGNATION, THE NEWS AGENCY SAID, BUT DR. SCHACHT HIMSELF, AT A FAREWELL PARTY FOR DOUGLAS JENKINS, AMERICAN CONSUL-GENERAL, WHO IS LEAVING SHORTLY FOR LONDON, ADMITTED FRANKLY THAT HE WAS OUT.

ASKED WHO HIS SUCCESSOR MIGHT BE, THE ECONOMICS ADMINISTRATOR SAID: “I AN NOT BREAKING MY HEAD ABOUT MY SUCCESSOR. THAT IS FOR OTHERS TO WORRY ABOUT.”

IT GENERALLY IS ASSUMED HERE THAT HE ALSO WILL QUIT THE REICHSBANK WHEN HIS CONTRACT EXPIRES ON MARCH 18, 1938.
