Charges that Anton Haegele, local Nazi rebel leader, is working with Congressman Samuel Dickstein to disrupt the Friends of New Germany were aired yesterday by the organization’s national president, Dr. Hubert Schnuch, in what purported to be an extra edition of the Deutsche Beobachter, Nazi organ recently seized by Haegele in a putsch.
Dr. Schnuch, from whom Haegele wrested control of the local Nazis, accused the separatists of saving Congressman Dickstein the trouble of breaking up the Friends. He quoted Dickstein as saying, “The Nazis have liquidated themselves.”
Serious trouble was anticipated last night at rallies in New York and Brooklyn called by the deposed Schnuch leadership in a desperate effort to regain control of local branches of the Friends. A strong police guard from the East Sixty-seventh Street precinct patrolled the Yorkville Turn Halle, fearing an attempt by Haegele followers to break up the meeting. The rally was closed except to members bearing credentials. Fritz Gissibl, former president of the Friends and Dr. Schnuch were to speak.
