The rift in the extreme right-wing Republican Party here deepened Tuesday as its newly reinstated leader, Franz Schoenhuber, traded charges with dissidents who walked out of the party convention when he was re-elected chairman Sunday night.
Harold Neubauer, who led the walkout, accused Schoenhuber of regaining power by fraud. He said he would bring charges before the party’s internal court or in a state court.
Schoenhuber, a former Waffen SS officer, told reporters his first task would be to halt the infiltration of neo-Nazis into the party.
Schoenhuber was ousted less than three months ago following a series of defeats for the Republicans in local and regional elections during the past year. Until then, the party considered by many to be neo-Nazi had the most successful record of any far-right political movement in West Germany.
