Ninety-four scholarships and fellowships have been awarded for the 1965-66 school year by local Jewish Community Centers and YM and YWHAs, the National Association of Jewish Center Workers and the National Jewish Welfare Board to 69 students for their graduate education in social work, it was announced here by Mrs. Robert M. Klein, chairman of JWB’s national scholarship committee. JWB is the national association of YM and YWHAs and Jewish Community Centers.
Awards totaling $250,000 have been made by JWB and its affiliated agencies, Mrs. Klein said. The grants range from scholarships valued at $1,500 – $4,000, to work-study plans worth $6,500. More than 20 students received more than one grant. All 69 plan professional careers in Jewish Community Center and YM and YWHA work. A recent survey revealed that there are at least 200 positions of major responsibility in YM and YWHAs and JCCs which are now unfilled for want of qualified staff. To be eligible for the awards, students must be accepted at an accredited graduate school of social work, and must be interested in Center and Y work as a career.
