Schroeder, the confessed slayer of Helling, the bookkeeper of the Magdeburg Jewish merchant Rudolph Haas, was sentenced to death in the trial held in the Magdeburg court, when the jury returned a verdict of guilty.
A dramatic scene was enacted on Saturday when Rudolph Haas, who was accused by anti-Semitic leaders and at first by Schroeder as having committed the murder, appeared in the court on Yom Kippur to testify in the case which has attracted wide attention in Germany. Haas declared that he did not know Schroeder and had never seen him prior to the charge brought against him.
The district attorney, in his statement fully vindicated Haas, declaring that on authoritative information, he could state that Rudolph Haas was absolutely innocent of the charge.
