Assurance that all Austrian citizens would be treated as equals before the law was given today by Chancellor Kurt Schuschnigg to representatives of the Jewish community who held a conference with him, it was officially reported.

In a lengthy meeting with the members of the executive board of the Vienna Jewish community, the Chancellor reiterated the intention of his government to make no distinctions between citizens based on race or religion. The Jewish delegation submitted a lengthy memorandum on the Jewish position in Austria and discussed it in detail with the Austrian government head.

Chancellor Schuschnigg formally reiterated a declaration on equality made to a group of Jewish leaders in Geneva, where he represented Austria at the sessions of the League of Nations.

Previously he had been accused of bad faith in making the declaration. While the Chancellor was placating world Jewish opinion at Geneva, the Austrian government put into force a law segregating Jewish children in specially created ghetto schools. The law had been passed at a secret session of the Austrian cabinet on July 4, but was not put into effect until the beginning of the school year late in September.
