A feeling of optimism which was “gratifying” was discerned in East Prussian Jewish life during 1934, according to the official report of the Federation of Jewish Communities in Prussia, which contains an account of a meeting of the East Prussian section of the federation recently held at Koenigsberg.
Rabbi Dr. Lewin of the Koenigsberg community submitted a review based on statistical data. The Jewish population of East Prussia fell off sharply in the last decade, he said, and in 1934 there were only twenty-nine Jewish communal officials active in fifty-six communities.
At Elbin only one Jewish child was born in a period of six years, the rabbi stated. Despite the serious situation, East Prussian Jewry is carrying on with valor, he said.
