Senator Ernest Gruening, Alaska Democrat, urged the United States today to move the Wheelus Air Base from Libya to Israel and conclude a mutual defense pact with Israel.

In a Senate speech, Sen. Gruening said that the time has come for a defensive agreement with Israel similar to the United States arrangements with Taiwan and the Philippines because vital United States security interests were involved in the survival of Israel.

Sen. Gruening called on President Johnson to lessen tensions in the Middle East by helping to end the Arab hostilities against Israel. The Senator said the United States policy in the Middle East was vacillating, weak and ineffectual.
