Senator Nye of North Dakota has introduced a bill to postpone the going into effect of the National Origins Clause of the immigration act for another year.
Under the present status, the clause would go into effect next July, unless Senator Nye’s bill is adopted. It is possible that the bill may not be acted upon at this session, but at the extra session following President-elect Hoover’s inauguration.
In (###)is Palo Alto acceptance speech, Mr. Hoover indicated his opposition to the National Origins clause, but Senator Reed of Pennsylvania, father of this plan, threw down the gauntlet to the President-elect in a statement in the Senate taking issue with Mr. Hoover, which evoked a flare-up of debate. A fight on the question is likely.
