The need for Jewish immigration to Israel from Western countries and the danger of “Israel being swamped by backward people” were stressed last night by Israel Foreign Minister Moshe Sharett, addressing a Zionist youth gathering here. The Israel Minister, who is on a good will visit to the Jewish community here, said that “unless Western immigration is forthcoming, the cultural standard of Israel will be endangered.”
Earlier, Mr. Sharett was guest of honor at a reception tendered at the home of Israel Consul-General Edward Goitien and attended by all members of the diplomatic corps stationed here. Yesterday Mr. Sharett addressed 5,000 persons at a rally in Wembley Stadium where he was made an honorary member of the South African Jewish Ex-Servicemen’s League, in “recognition of his services in World War II.”
