Sir Herbert Samuel, noted British liberal statesman and First High Commissioner of Palestine, arrived here today on the liner Duchess of Richmond, leading the British delegation to the fifth biennial conference of the Institute of Pacific Relations. Lord Snell, of Plumstead, who was raised to the peerage on becoming Under Secretary for India in 1931, and who served as a member of the commission which investigated the Palestine disturbances in 1929, is a member of the delegation and also arrived today.
Declaring “I never give interviews,” Sir Herbert fended off newspapermen who sought to question him about the German-Jewish situation and about problems to be taken up at the Pacific Relations conference.
The arrival of Sir Herbert here was made the occasion for a vicious attack by the local anti-Semitic newspaper, Le Patriot, which asserted that Sir Herbert was serving as the emissary of the “Elders of Zion” and that his purpose in visiting Canada was to bring about the opening of Canada’s portals to Jews fleeing from Hitlerite persecution in Germany.
