Sir Isaac Wolfson, the distinguished merchant and philanthropist, has been elected a fellow of the Royal Society, an honor usually conferred upon outstanding scientists.
Sir Isaac’s election was made possible by a statute enacted in 1902 providing for the election to the Society of persons who have either rendered distinguished service to the cause of science or who, in the words of the statute, “are such that their election would be of signal benefit to the Society.” Through the Isaac Wolfson Foundation, Sir Isaac has given away more than $42,000,000 for causes ranging from cancer research to women’s education at Cambridge.
