Six Jews were elected to the Brazilian Chamber of Deputies, the lower house of Brazil’s parliament, in the recent country wide elections, according to the tallies completed here today. The total represents the largest number of Jews in the Chamber of Deputies in Brazil’s history. In addition, a number of Jews were elected as representatives in several state legislatures. Among those elected to the Assemblies of provincial legislatures were two Jews in Guanabara, two in Sao Paulo, and one in Panama.
Those elected to the national Chamber of Deputies are: Mrs. Julia Steinbruch, representing a district in the State of Rio de Janeiro. She is the wife of Senator Aaron Steinbruch, who is honorary president of the Confederation of Jewish Communities of Brazil; David Lerer and Marcos Kertzman, representing districts in Sao Paulo; Ruben Medina, of Guanabara; Henrique Henkin, of Rio Grande de Sul; and Abraham Saba, reelected from a district in the Amazons. All were chosen with sizable majorities by both Jewish and non-Jewish voters.
