The South African Board of Jewish Deputies has presented to Parliament a statement describing as “fantastic” an allegation in an official police report that the Board of Deputies controls the Communist Party in the Union. It made the statement public.
The Minister of Justice referred to the report in Parliament last April 29, and the Board subsequently demanded the right to communicate its denial of the charges to the House. The police report quotes Michael Harmel, a well known columnist, as its source for the allegation. It has been entered in the official minutes of the House.
G. Saron, secretary of the South African Board of Jewish Deputies, said here today that there is “no united voice among members of the Jewish community on the various political issues confronting South Africa.” He declared that the Jewish community here would fight “any manifestation of anti-Semitism, but would not allow itself to be drawn into party controversies, on which each individual Jew has his own opinion.”
