The Socialist International demanded last night international guarantees for the existing frontiers of Israel. A resolution to this effect was adopted at the conclusion of a two-day meeting here of the Bureau of the Socialist International. The motion, introduced by Mapai delegate S. Levenburg, was supported by Aneuran Bevan and Hugh Gaitskell of the British Labor Party, Guy Mollet of the French Socialist Party, and Erich Ollenhauer, head of the West German Social Democratic Party.
A report to the Bureau noted that the Asian Socialist conference had decided to send a mission to the Middle East to study labor elements there and to assist in the attainment of a peaceful settlement of the region’s problems. The itinerary and terms of reference of the group will be laid down after consultations with the Israeli Mapai Party and the Lebanese Progressive Socialist Party.
