After a last plea by the oppositionists, including General Jan Smuts, the new South African quota bill has been slightly modified to allow for the next three years the admission outside the quota of wives and children of South African citizens to the number of 750.
Only a third reading in the South African Parliament remains before the bill, which limits the number of immigrants to be admitted each year from Eastern Europe to a total of 50, comes into force as a law on May 1.
