The Soviet government, following negotiations with the European director of the Hias, Aron Benjamin, has agreed to reduce the duty on matzoth to be imported into Soviet Russia next Passover from $6.70 to $2.75, it was announced here today.
Mr. Benjamin has resigned his office, after three years in the post, for private reasons. He will be replaced by Dr. James Bernstein of New York, who was for five years prior to Mr. Benjamin European representative of the Hias. The latter is a brother of John L. Bernstein, former president of the Hias.
Mr. Benjamin, it is understood, asked to be relieved of his duties, some time ago, and arrangements to replace him have only now been made.
