The Soviet anti-Israel, anti-Jewish policy has attracted wide attention in Turkey, one of the U.S.S.R.’s closest NATO neighbors, and the Turkish press has been featuring reports of the Soviet campaign on their frontpages.

The major concern of Turkish political circles with the campaign is that it may throw additional difficulties in the path of the projected Middle East Defense Organization, in which Turkey would be one of the leading factors. Turkish leaders have expressed the hope that the Arabs would not bite for the Soviet halt.

Although Turkish leaders frankly see no way for the projected regional organization to include the Israelis and the Arabs while no formal peace has been established between them, they express the hope that Israel will join the MEDO.
