Spanish Government Takes Action for Protection of Jews in Morroco

The Spanish Embassy in London has issued the following statement:

“It will be interesting to those who have read of the ill-treatment to which a Jew was submitted in the Spanish zone of Morocco by the Governor of Arzila to know that although the said official had recourse to methods which, barbrous in themselves, are traditional in Morocco, he has been called to Tetuan, where he will be the object of measures on the part of the Government which will ensure his abstaining in the future from such ill-usage, and he will, morover, be obliged to return to his victim the money confiscated from the latter, as a consequence of the charge made by a local Noor. The guilty Governor will also have to pay the cost of medical treatment for the Jew, and must appear before the courts of law for the payment of damages to the injured man. The Shereefian Khalifa of the Spanish zone has addressed a circular to all the local authorities of the country, forbidding them under the threat of severe punishment to subject inhabitants to cruelty of any sort, whatever may be the customs existing there in former times.”
