The State Department is not making any effort to ascertain the facts of the ex-Mufti’s escape from France to Syria, Secretary of State Byrnes told his press conference today.
Responding to questions about the Mufti, the Secretary said that the Department has no information on the escape except press reports. When asked if the United States considers the Mufti a war criminal, and whether Husseini is on the list of war criminals determined by the war crimes tribunals in Germany and Japan, he said he did not know.
