Prominent lawyers of both major political parties have started a movement here urging Judge Horace Stern as a candidate for the Pennsylvania Supreme Court to succeed Chief Justice Robert S. Frazer, whose term expires in January, 1936.
Judge Stern has been with the Common Pleas Court for fifteen years. Long regarded an outstanding member of the Philadelphia bench, he is a close friend of Justice Benjamin Cardozo of the United States Supreme Court and like him is known as a jurist of liberal views.
The indifference towards Jewish affairs so frequently manifested in Jewish circles was deplored by Judge Stern in an address delivered at the thirteenth anniversary dinner of the Brith Sholom.
“Our greatest enemies are internal,” Judge Stern declared, “and the greatest of these is indifference—indifference to religion, to education, to those spiritual ideals for which our people stand. If Jews suffer defeat, this defeat will not be at the hands of the Nazis but because we and our children do not live up to the Jewish traditions.”
