Governor Ronald Storrs of Jerusalem, was the guest at an informal luncheon today at India House, at which he described plans for the general rehabilitation of the Holy City, in the carrying out of which he stated that he hoped to enlist the cooperation of all the racial and religious elements represented in Jerusalem’s cosmopolitan population.
The luncheon was given by the New York and National Officers of the English-Speaking Union of the U.S., those present including members of the local committee and national Board of Directors with a number of men and women especially interested in the objects of Governor Storr’s visit to America. Dr. John E. Finley, Chairman of the New York Chapter of the Union, presided.
Governor Storrs emphasized the importance of technical education as in his judgement one of the best means of promoting initiative and the habit of industry among the people of Jerusalem. These and other activities now under way or in view, he said, are conducted under the auspices of the Pro-Jerusalem Society, which is “strictly and exclusively undenominational and gives employment to Christians, Moslems and Jews, of both sexes, without any distinction whatever of race or creed.” These plans were outlined to him by President Harding in a conference at the White House last Wednesday.
The guests at the Speakers table included Capt. Gloster Armstrong, British Consul General at New York, and Mrs. Armstrong; Mr. Edward Gray, British Consul General at Boston, and Mrs. Gray; Hon. John V. Davis, formerly American Ambassador to Great Britain, and President of the English-Speaking Union; Hon. George W. Wickersam, Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Union, and Chas. C Goodrich, its Secretary-treasurer. Among the others present were:
Dr. Israel Abrahams, Bernard Flexner, E.M. Friedman, Otto H. Kahn, Solomon Lowenstein, S.A. Lewisohn, Hon. Henry Morgenthau, Felix M. Warburg, Paul M. Warburg Louis Wiley and Dr. Stephen S. Wise.
