Students from about 100 eastern colleges and universities, led by Hillel members from Brandeis and American Universities, will stage a rally in Washington April 20 to support the struggle of Soviet Jews, it was announced by Larry Sebert of Overland Park, Kansas, a Brandeis freshman and a rally coordinator. He said that between 200 and 300 students are expected to participate.
The rally, to include discussions with Congressmen and participation in the ongoing vigil at the Soviet Embassy, is being organized by the Greater Boston Student-Faculty Coalition for Soviet Jewry and American University’s Hillel chapter and Student Struggle for Soviet Jewry.
“The emphasis is on gathering a group of dedicated and well-informed representatives to convey the message of students and faculty who feel strongly about the preservation of human rights,” Sebert said. “We are not attempting to draw a huge crowd. Our power-base is not in the number of students that we’ll have in Washington, but the thousands of students and professors we represent across the United States.” The rally coordinators are hoping that their efforts will help lead to the release of imprisoned Anatoly Sharansky.
