The proceeds of the first concert of the academic chorus of the Hebrew University are to be devoted in part to the building of the projected students’ hostel on Mount Scopus, for which 1,300 pound have been collected in England. The sum includes a 500 pound donation from W. Garrison Patley, of London.
The academic chorus will present Bible scenes in classic music, including Handel’s “Solomon’s Judgment,” Carissimi’s “Jephtah,” and Bach’s Cantato 196 based on Psalm 115. The mountains of Ammon and Moab, Trans-Jordan, upon which the Bible story of Jephtah the judge and his daughter was enacted, form a fitting and beautiful background to the Minnie Untermyer Memorial Open Air Theatre at the University, in which the oratorios will be given.
German Jewish soloists will take part in the chorus singing. Karl Salomon, a distinguished musician, now a German Jewish emigre in Palestine, has trained the chorus of the university and of the Young Women’s Hebrew Association, which will present the oratorios. He is a member of the university’s Extension department for music. Another member is Emil Hauser, of Budapest, head of the Jerusalem Conservatoire of Music, who will conduct the Jerusalem Chamber orchestra at the concert, scheduled for the first day of Passover week, April 2.
