Premier Golda Meir said here that Egypt should be prepared to recognize that Sharm el-Sheikh constitutes a vital interest for Israel. She added, however, that Israel must understand at the same time that Egypt would not be able to sign a peace agreement that kept Israeli troops on the Suez Canal.
Mrs. Meir spoke at the closing session of the three-day Board of Governors meeting of the Hebrew University Thursday night. The Premier noted that the majority of Israelis did not consider the Suez Canal as the final border between Israel and Egypt. She also stressed that Sharm el-Sheikh was important to Egypt only for placing cannons there to block Israeli shipping.
Mrs. Meir said she was convinced that Jordanian King Hussein sincerely wanted peace, but signing a peace agreement with him would not guarantee that some future. Jordanian government would live up to its terms. She noted that Arab terrorists have said that they would kill Hussein if he signed a peace agreement with Israel.
