The Supreme Court has deferred until Wednesday a decision on the appeal by Rabbi Meir Kahane’s Kach party against the Central Election Committee’s vote last week barring its participation in the July 23 Knesset elections.
The Committee voted 18-10 against Kach on grounds that the philosophy it expounds would undermine the democratic basis of Israel’s society. Kahane, who claims his platform is based on the Bible, argued in his appeal that the Central Elections committee has political bias and should not be allowed to determine such issues.
He quoted earlier Supreme Court rulings that a political faction can be barred from elections only if it poses a danger to the existence of the State. According to Kahane, that consideration does not apply to Kach.
