A Rumanian fascist officer who supervised the under of tens of thousands of Jews deported to Transnistria was confronted in court today with two of his victims who survived. The officer, a Colonel Isopescu, is being tried by a Peoples Tribunal as a war criminal.
Jacob Effemian, 42, said that before having the Jews killed Isopescu compelled them to surrender all their valuables to him, promising that he would give them their value in money. Joseph Braunstein, 20, said that he had been forced to pile up the bodies of Isopescu’s victims and prepare them for cremation. His own parents, he edded, were among the murdered.
