Switzerland’s leading trouble-shooter on Holocaust restitution issues lashed out at New York City Comptroller Alan Hevesi for accusing the Swiss government of breaking its word that it would be involved in a global settlement of Holocaust-era claims. In a letter to Hevesi, Thomas Borer said the government never made such a commitment, adding that “intimidation tactics like these can only recall the most flagrant propaganda methods.” The letter comes just days after Hevesi and other U.S. finance officials cleared the way for sanctions against Swiss banks in light of the collapse of the settlement talks.
