A teachers’ strike that would affect 600,000 primary and secondary school children all over Israel, loomed today, three days before the new school year is scheduled to begin. The teachers’ union has presented 80 demands ranging from classroom conditions and the number of pupils per class to wages and hours of work. The union said the strike would affect only eight cities, including Tel Aviv. Jerusalem, Haifa and Beersheba. But high school teachers said the walk-out would be nation-wide if no settlement is reached.
