The Turkish Ministry of Education has authorized the teaching of the Hebrew language, using modern teaching methods in the Jewish schools of Turkey, the Chief Rabbinate disclosed today. Instruction in Hebrew will commence immediately with textbooks received by the Chief Rabbinate from the United States.
Jewish circles here today expressed keen disappointment at the failure of the Government to act on the Chief Rabbinate’s request for permission to send a delegation to the World Sephardic Congress at Paris. In two requests to the authorities, the Chief Rabbinate stressed the non-political character of the Paris assembly and the fact that the delegation would represent the entire Jewish community, not an organization affiliated with others outside Turkey. Affiliation of Turkish groups with foreign organizations is forbidden under Turkish law.
