Israel’s United Nations Ambassador Yosef Tekoah protested to Secretary General U Thant today that Soviet Ambassador Yakob A. Malik was minimizing the situation of Soviet Jewry. In Malik’s July 2 letter on the matter, Tekoah said, he did not reply to the June 22 charges by Israel of Soviet maltreatment of Jews but instead chose “to heap the standard Soviet invective on the legitimate and worldwide concern for the plight of the Jews of the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics.”
