The latest development in the bitter controversy which has been raging in Newark over changing the name of Waverly avenue to Fuld avenue is an anonymous letter to Rabbi Solomon Foster of Congregation B’nai Jeshurun, Fuld avenue, threatening to bomb his temple unless the street is given its original name.
The writer of the letter, who is believed to be a crank, places sole responsibility for the change on the shoulders of Rabbi Foster, who declares he had little to do with it.
Newark police took the letter seriously, withholding it until today and posting a police guard in front of the synagogue for twelve hours each night, ever since the letter was received two weeks ago.
FOSTER DISCOUNTS DANGER
Rabbi Foster, in an interview with the Jewish Daily Bulletin, was inclined to discount the danger, saying, “I am not at all concerned about it. I don’t think anything will happen, and I would rather not speak about it.”
Police will continue to guard the edifice every night for an indefinite period, they said today.
