The 15-member U.N. Security Council took up Palestinian Authority President Yasser Arafat’s request for international peacekeepers to monitor the West Bank and Gaza Strip. However, Israeli diplomatic sources said several council members agree with U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan that peacekeepers could not be dispatched without Israel’s approval. Arafat was expected to make a direct appeal to the council on Friday.
