The Alabama state legislature sent Gov. Fob James a bill that calls for a mandatory moment of “quiet reflection” in schools. The measure comes in response to a federal judge’s ruling last year that struck down Alabama’s school prayer law, which allowed for voluntary, student-initiated prayer. The legislation, which the governor supports, says the reflection period is not intended to be “a religious service or exercise,” but “an opportunity of silent reflection on the anticipated activities of the day.”
