The Democratic Party acted lawfully when it refused to count votes cast for a political extremist in the 1996 presidential primaries, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled. In January 1996, the Democratic National Committee sent letters to state party leaders saying Lyndon LaRouche was “not a bona fide Democrat” because his beliefs were “explicitly racist and anti-Semitic.”
