The European Union’s Middle East envoy met with Syria’s foreign minister to discuss a possible withdrawal of Israeli troops from Lebanon. The talks came after Lebanon’s prime minister said last week that a treaty was possible within three months if Israel agreed to pick up peace talks with Syria where they left off in 1996. Israel has said it would resume talks if they begin without any preconditions.
