The number of foreign workers in Israel jumped by 45 percent since the Palestinian uprising began last September, an Israeli official told Reuters. The official said the number of foreign workers increased by 76,000, for a total of 248,000. The workers were imported to replace Palestinian laborers barred from Israel since the violence began.
