The number of refugees the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society helped bring to the United States decreased by 2,000 people in 2001. As a result of tightened U.S. immigration policy following the Sept.11 terrorist attacks, HIAS helped 4,994 refugees in 2001, as opposed to 6,903 in 2000.
